How useful is a lift chair? How does it compare with a couch cane?
Lift chairs vs couch cane or couch assist, which one is better for someone who has issues getting in and out of a chair or a couch? My Mom has arthritis. Drug therapy has been helpful in controlling the progression and she’s doing very well. I personally hate a lift chair, but sometimes I feel she’s a little more fatigued than usual and experiences some joint discomfort. Of course, she’ll never admit to it, but I definitely think some “extra” help won’t hurt her. I’ve looked into some lift chairs online, as well as couch canes. Any suggestions on which way to go?
Every person has unique mobility challenges and needs. So basically the choice you make will depend on your mother’s abilities and strength. If her fatigue and her joint discomfort aren’t too serious, a couch cane is going to be an easy solution. It will address her specific needs as you’ve described them. If you think her situation is more serious and maybe her fatigue has made her weak, then she might be in need of extra support to lift herself up. In this case, a lift chair would be the answer.
A couch cane is a support handle that attaches to your couch and makes sitting and standing easier, especially if because of age or medical conditions you need help getting to the edge of the chair and need help with your balance when rising. It’s affordable, adjustable, portable and doesn’t clutter your household living room. A lift chair looks and feels like a regular chair; the difference is that it comes with an electric motor and a handheld remote that allows you to raise or lower the chair. It helps when you have difficulty sitting down or standing up due to aging, arthritis, surgery or any other issue that limits your mobility. It provides comfort and safety, and you can choose from a variety of styles. As I see it, both devices provide support and assistance for sitting and standing from a couch or chair. The only reason a couch cane would not be useful for someone is if they’re too weak, because it could require more upper body strength to pull themselves up, whereas the lift chair would do this work for them. In your case, I think a couch cane would be ideal. It will give your mom the extra support she needs and it will save you money.
